Valentine’s Day is just twenty-four hours away, but the celebration is already in full swing at Kernan Elementary. Ms. Marshall’s K-2 class has spent the last few weeks watching their school walls transform into a hub of national connection, thanks to the overwhelming success of their Hearts Across America project.
What started as a simple lesson in geography and kindness blossomed into a cross-country event. To date, the students have received heartfelt cards and letters from 38 different states! From coast to coast the mailbox has been overflowing with love and support from across the nation. This project was about more than just opening envelopes. With every new piece of mail students learned about geography, coloring in each newly represented state to track their progress. The class maintained a running tally of their collection, practicing their counting and organizational skills. Each card served as a mini-lesson, giving the children a chance to learn fun facts about the unique landscapes, landmarks and cultures of the states that sent them mail.
A massive thank you goes out to every person who took a moment to put a stamp on an envelope and a smile on a student's face. You didn't just send a Valentine, you helped a child realize that kindness has no borders.
